Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) in Brazil: What does the arrival of the Swedish retail giant mean?

The recent announcement that the Swedish retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) will launch physical stores and online sales in Brazil from 2025 has stirred the retail industry, as highlighted by journalist Ivan Martínez-Vargas in a recent article for O Globo.

H&M is already present in the Latin American region with stores in Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, and Costa Rica. Now, it's Brazil's turn.

To support its expansion, H&M has partnered with the Dorben Group, a company specializing in the distribution of luxury brands in Latin America.

H&M's entry into Brazil won't be an easy game.

The Brazilian consumer has a different behavioral profile compared to consumers abroad. Therefore, H&M will need to adapt its strategy in various aspects, including brand positioning, product assortment, pricing, and target audience. This will also influence the choice of store sizes.

In the other countries where it operates, H&M doesn't position itself as a luxury brand, and its chosen partner, the Dorben Group, specializes in luxury brands. Luxury brands set their own styles, and consumers follow them, unlike stores with the profile of H&M, ZARA SA, SHEIN, Lojas Renner S.A., C&A Brasil, etc., which follow general fashion trends to cater to a broader audience.

Furthermore, there is the challenge of the tax burden for retailers in Brazil, which ranges from 80% to 130%; um dos motivos pelos quais outros players internacionais, tais como Gap, TOPSHOP TOPMAN e Forever 21, desistiram de atuar por aqui.

In addition to these challenges, fashion retailers are feeling more market pressure due to the recent government decision to exempt foreign platforms from import taxes starting from August this year.

Only time will tell how the Swedish giant will perform in Brazil in practice. However, historical context, the current scenario, and the profile of Brazilian consumers already allow us to make these and other analyses.
